Following a hiatus of 3 years, the Indian Premier League is set to return to its initial Home and Away format in India. This implies that Spin bowlers, who have been the most successful in the IPL’s history, will once again garner the attention they have always received.
Whether it’s the Chennai stronghold, the sluggish and low pitches of Delhi, or the pacey wickets of Bangalore, the spinners will be the center of attention. Almost every team has a set of 2-3 quality spinners in their side who will reap huge rewards as the tournament progresses and the pitches slow down.
Considering the quality of spinners in the competition, let’s determine which team has the best spin attack for IPL 2023. As usual, we will evaluate all 10 teams’ spinners’ ranking and rating for IPL 2023 based on our distinct and dependable methodology, as described below.
Methodology: Spinners are categorized as three Solid Spinners, Primary backup Spinners, and Secondary backup Spinners. To eliminate any biases or perceptions, all spinners are relatively rated on a scale of 10 in comparison to the benchmark spinner. The last three IPL performances and current International/Domestic form will be considered for evaluation, with more weightage being given to IPL performance.
Let’s examine the ranking and rating of each team’s best spinners for IPL 2023, using our unique methodology with Rashid Khan as the benchmark spinner.
#10: Mumbai Indians тАУ 6.54.┬а
The Mumbai Indians have secured the 10th position for their spin attack with a rating of 6.54, which should come as no surprise given that they play 7 matches at Wankhede and don’t usually invest heavily in spinners. Piyush Chawla, who is past his prime, is their best spinner with a rating of 7.75.
Apart from Chawla, Mumbai Indians have an inexperienced group of spinners, including Kumar Kartikeya at 6.25, Hrithik Shokeen and Shams Mulani at 5.5, and Tilak Varma and Raghav Goyal at 5. If they play two spinners in the squad, it is likely to be Kumar Kartikeya and Piyush Chawla.
Overall, the Mumbai Indians have a lot of ground to cover in terms of strengthening their spin attack, particularly if they want to compete with the top teams in the league.
#9: Punjab Kings тАУ 7.81
The Punjab Kings are placed at the 9th position in terms of their spin attack, but they have a much stronger spin attack than the Mumbai Indians with a rating of 7.81. Their best spinner is Rahul Chahar, who has a rating of 9.25. However, the rest of the spinners in the team are either inexperienced or part-timers. After Chahar, Liam Livingstone is ranked at 7.5, followed by Harpreet Brar at 7 and Sikandar Raza at 6.75.
Apart from their top two spinners, Punjab Kings have a couple of solid backup spinners in Harpreet Brar and Sikandar Raza, who could come in handy in certain situations. However, they will need to ensure that their spinners are consistent and can perform well in different conditions if they want to compete with the top teams in the league.
#8: Kolkata Knight Riders тАУ 7.88
At the 8th position, we have KKR with a rating of 7.88 in the spinners category. The team has two solid spinners in Sunil Narine and Shakib Al Hasan with a rating of 8.5 and 8.25 respectively. However, Narine is not in his old form and may not be as effective as he used to be. Shakib, on the other hand, is a good bowler but may not be the best-suited for T20s. Varun Chakravarthy, their primary backup spinner with a rating of 8, is currently out of form. Anukul Roy and Suyash Sharma are two other decent options for KKR in the spin department.
#7: Delhi Capitals тАУ 8.00
At the 7th position, we have the Delhi Capitals with a spinners’ rating of 8. The team has a strong spin duo with Kuldeep Yadav being their top spinner at a rating of 9.5 and Axar Patel as a reliable second spinner with a rating of 8.25. However, Delhi lacks depth in their spin department as the other three spinners, Lalit Yadav, Pravin Dubey, and Vicky Ostwal are more of part-time options.
